My first job was when I was sixteen and it was in a bakery, a family own bakery. It was a part time job and must of my time was spent at the front of the shop. I loved going to work. It always smelled so good. One of the all time favorite cookies was the Grageas cookies.
Grageas cookies are one of the most common cookies you find in a Latin bakery. Some people call them “mantecaditos”. This cookie is a crumbly cookie loaded with sprinkles and some people add a little food coloring to the dough before baking. Just a little! I personally like to add some color, a light orange color, that is how I remember them from our bakeries in Puerto Rico.

Even though I didn’t get to bake while working in the bakery, I did pick up on some tips and tricks. I want to share with you this Grageas Cookies recipe, it’s a special recipe. Grageas cookies reminds me of family, my first job, and my teens years in Puerto Rico. I come from a long line of bakers, go figure, right? Baking cookies is my favorite.
Grageas Cookies {Sprinkles Cookies}
(recipe by: Wanda Lopez (My Sweet Zepol)Ingredients
1/2 cup Butter
1/2 cup Vegetable Shortening
1/2 cup Sugar
1/2 teaspoon Almond Extract
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
2 1/4 cups Flour
1 teaspoon Orange food coloring
Sprinkles
Directions
Preheat oven at 350 degrees.
In a medium bowl or electric mixer cream the butter, shortening and sugar until smooth.
Add the almond and vanilla extracts.
Mix in the flour a little at a time.
Add the orange food coloring. I use a teaspoon, but you can add more or less.
Using a teaspoon make balls of dough.
Make a small impression to each ball using your thumb, top with the sprinkles and put on the baking sheet. Leave some space between the cookies for spreading while baking.
Bake for 20-25 minutes or until they are a light golden color.
Cool on a wire rack.
Tip: Plus you can make this cookies with any other color or no color at all.
